Guide to Accommodation Ratings

Many of the establishments listed have been rated according to the standard of service, range of facilities and comfort level offered. These ratings are usually awarded by either the English Tourism Council (ETC) or the Automobile Association (AA). The Royal Automobile Club (RAC) used to be part of this inspection scheme but ceased in December 2005. However some establishments may still display their sign up until the end of 2006. The scheme has recently undergone some changes but the main criteria remains the same, ie each participating establishment will receive a visit from an assessor which may take the form of a 'mystery shop' or a pre-planned visit and the rating given will be based on the experience of the assessor at the time of the visit.

Stars usually rate Hotels and now include Guest Houses, Inns, and Bed & Breakfast, however, Hotels are inspected using different criteria to how a Guest House is inspected. There will be a big difference between a Three Star Hotel and a Three Star Guest Accommodation rating, so please make sure that you understand the differences between them. Stars are also used to rate self catering accommodation but using different criteria.

In the changeover period (up until 2008) some establishments may show a Diamond Rating. This is part of the old inspection scheme and will only apply to Guest Houses, Inns and Bed and Breakfast establishments. Any grade awarded will be inspected to the same minimum standards as the new Star Rating Guest Accommodation scheme.

In all cases the minimum rating is one and maximum rating is five.

Anyone who only displays the Scarborough Hospitality Association logo will have been inspected to the same minimum standards as the ETC's and the AA's by our own inspector. Some establishments chcose not to participate in the rating scheme, so the absence of a rating does not indicate poor quality of amenities or service.
